Dr. and Mrs. Doug Rawls (Joyce)

704 S. Main St.

Captain J. Westcoat built this home in 1890 which features Victorian, Regency and Classic Revival architectural elements. The home was purchased and remodeled to its current floor plan in 1900 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Hugenin. He was the last Confederate commander of Fort Sumter. Today, the home still features the original six fireplaces, hand-poured wavy glass windows, and serviceable shutters. The main foyer has deep crown molding of carved travertine stone supported by rods extending to the second floor. The home has five porches, five bedrooms and five bathrooms. Some Summerville residents will recall attending a festive party on Christmas Eve at this “Christmas Party House” when Mr. and Mrs. Jim Martin owned the home. The current owners have a deep appreciation for the history and quality craftsmanship and materials apparent in the home and have enjoyed the challenge of maintaining the integrity of a historic home in the 21st century!
