Mr. and Mrs. Tim Kennedy (Ranai)
114 Rutherford St.
“The
Oliver House” was built in 1888 by Henry Oliver who left the
home to his daughter, Mary Riley, the grandmother of Charleston
mayor Joe Riley. Mrs. Riley sold the home in 1946 and until 1995
the home had six different owners. The French Victorian style
home features 12 French doors and a stairway taken from the
Carolina Inn on Sumter Avenue before it was torn down. This home
was the first to be air conditioned in Summerville! A masonry
cistern in the basement was filled with ice. Servants would fan
cool air upward through a hole in the floor under the dining
room table to cool the dining room. The home was remodeled in
1995 and the current owners enjoy spending time together on the
wrap around porch and yard. |
