Dorchester Children's Center Facts and Statistics

In 2005-2006 there were 16,898 reports of child abuse or neglect in South Carolina---this number is estimated to be 3 times higher, making it closer to 50,694. South Carolina ranked 50th in the nation in preventing, responding to and treating child abuse.

Any child is a potential victim of child abuse and neglect.

  • 1 in 4 girls, and 1 in 6 boys, will be sexually abused before the age of 18.
  • 1 in 5 children are solicited sexually while on the internet.
  • Child abuse and neglect does not discriminate. Children of all races, socio-economic backgrounds and ages are abused and neglected.
  • Children who attend school with your children, go to your church, or are a part of your family may be experiencing physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect.
  • More than 905,000 children in the U.S. were reported as abused or neglected in 2006 and over 16,000 of these children are in South Carolina.
Some children don’t survive child abuse and neglect.
  • In 2004, 33 children died as a result of abuse or neglect in South Carolina.
  • 59 child fatalities were confirmed as abuse-related since the year 2000.
Abuse and neglect can have life-long impact on a child.
  • Survivors of abuse are 6 times more likely to become abusive parents.
  • 45 percent of abused children become adult alcoholics.
  • 85 percent of long term prisoners were abused as children.
  • 75 percent of high school dropouts have a history of abuse in their families.
  • Abused children are 25 percent more likely to repeat a grade in school.
Child abuse and neglect isn’t happening “somewhere else.” It’s a local problem!
  • There were 461 reported cases of child abuse and neglect in Dorchester County in 2007.
  • Dorchester County ranked 34 of 46 counties in South Carolina, in the number of confirmed cases of child abuse in 2007.
The Seventh Annual Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour, to benefit Children In Crisis, Inc., was held Sunday, October 11, 2009.

Each year the Kitchen Tour is a unique delight for the senses as patrons tour grand homes in Summerville and sample gourmet treats prepared by premiere Lowcountry chefs. Local musicians are scheduled to perform in each home or garden and area florists grace the interior décor with floral arrangements. The homes are toured from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
